Considering Divorce or Separation?

I believe that effective couple counseling is very helpful for partners who have chosen or are considering separation or divorce. Of course, separation has important consequences that need to be considered deeply (especially if there are children involved), but staying in a chronically distressed relationship can be just as troubling. Often there has been a disturbing revelation such as an affair or a long-standing financial secret which has thrown the partnership into crisis. Whatever the circumstances, the partners know that it can’t go on like this.

And they’re right: it can’t stay the same. Counseling helps to create the change and clarity needed to either continue the marriage with a whole new level of honesty and connection or to move on to new lives apart. Either way, your direction needs to be very different. And if you do choose to separate, counseling will help you keep the lines of communication open and relatively friendly for the sake of any children who may be involved and to keep the expenses of attorneys to a minimum. Often, partners who have chosen to divorce need a variety of new services for which I can give referrals.
